Posh Pear for Altered Eclectics

As a teen I had to do a lot of things that I didn't like. I am sure you can relate.

But let's not think about that.

Right now, think about what you enjoyed doing as a teenager...creatively, that is.

When I was in tenth grade, my mother brought home a stack of magazines found in an old summer house on a tiny island in Connecticut. These editions were from the early 1900's. I started doing collage with them. I slapped old ads onto barn wood, slate, whatever I came across. I used Elmer's glue and orange shellac.

Soon, I moved away from the old magazines and started doing collage with words and images cut from more recent sources, expressing myself through the combinations. I made myself a purse out of an old lunchbox, and created items for my room using an empty tissue box, a tin can to hold pens and pencils, and the lampshade for my desk light.

Now, after years of drawing and painting classes, and with a love of stamping, here I am back with collage. I am no longer using glue and shellac, but stuff like Mod Podge and Distress inks. I love the look the Distress Inks give this pear. It reminds me so much of the orange shellac I once used.

This pear is my first project for a new altered art blog called, Altered Eclectics.  As a member of the Design Team, I will create an item every month. This is the first of many.

This is a kraft paper pear with a plastic stem. I chose the pear for its beautiful shape.

The following 3 images are my work in progress...

 

 

 My materials...a dictionary from a yard sale for 25 cents, a set of pear stamps by Flourishes, a Graphic 45 image of a stamp, and an old paper bag from Cracker Barrel

 (a great place to see old ads on the wall by the way ;-).

 

 

 Also used, a black inkpad, Mod Podge, a sponge brush, beads and wire, along with

Distress Inks by Ranger, and a sponge.

 

 

I ripped and layered my images and words, then wound the wire around the stem. The leaf was created by stringing beads onto the wire and bending it into shape.

 

 

Mod Podge was used as a final coat, then sponging with Distress Inks in Walnut Stain and

 Vintage Photo to give the pear a "pearish" color.

 

I love the easy flow of creating with this technique. There is no right or wrong...

you just go with it until it makes you happy!

Tuesday Throwdown Challenge - Le Cirque

 

This card was made with a digi from the Paper Shelter. This card is meant to inspire you to enter the Tuesday Throwdown Challenge...go for it!

 

 

 

It's a fantasy challenge. My fantasy is to be great at something...to be "famous"? No...but I would like to be good at what I do.

 

 

 

I have been a wife, mother and grandmother...a teacher, a baker, and an artist. I have also been a pen pal, a friend, a team member, and an event planner.

 

What am I good at? I don't know, but I have had a blast trying it all!

 

 

 

I made this card with a big flower cutout on my Cricut. It was actually 8 1/2 inches wide. I centered it on the black card and cut off most of the petal...leaving a sunburst. I used chalks to make the stars with a leftover scrap from Cricut cut stars. Stickles give her feather some shine, silver glitter paper shadows, chrome gems from Michaels, and Prismacolor Pencils with mineral spirits to bring her to life. I shade with color, not black or gray. Bravo is from CTMH.

More Masking

I am just loving the black stamped images by Crafty Secrets. Created with another masking technique, the simplicity of the background adds dimension to the images.

I used some silver thread that I have had for YEARS, but as most crafters, years is not all that long, is it?

Liquid Glass by CTMH was used on the hearts to add more dimension. I added a bit of red Prismacolor Marker as an accent. Tiny metal gems from Michael's are used in the bitten off corners, where I used a circle punch to bite them off.

The b&w patterned paper is from a Christmas paper stack by MME.

CAS Masking Magic

 

Working on cards for my next class schedule, I am experimenting with all sorts of MASKING.

 

 

This card was made with a technique called, "reverse masking". I used some old stamp sets I have held onto forever...See Dee's and CTMH. I used my old chalks, something which is not on trend right now, but I love them so!

 

I used some Enamel Accents by Ranger in black to make the silhouette shine. The greeting is from a Post Card set by Crafty Secrets.

Masking Magic

 

This card was made using a masking technique. I am totally intrigued by the variety of art which can be created using this tried and true way of art.

 

I love the monochromatic look of this. I used the die cuts as masks over the stamped images.

I made this card using a stamp set call Innoscents, with matching Nestabilities dies
by Heartfelt Creations.

The background was stamped over the masked images. It's an oldie from CTMH.

Dad's Plaid Shirt

 

I only have one key to my heart...and George holds it.  I wanted to use an image from Digital Delights for their challenge, but the hearts I had all had ruffles...and if there's one thing MOST men don't prefer, it's ruffles. So, I cut them off!

 

 

 

I printed the digital stamp and the paper, which is also from DD's on craft cardstock with my Kodak Hero printer. To make the button strip I cut a 1 1/4 by 5 1/4 inch strip of the plaid paper. I scored it with my Martha Stewart  Score Board at 1/4 in on each side. I folded the sides back and stitched it onto the "shirt" with heavy duty thread on my Singer.

 

 

 The buttons are threaded with waxed flax and held in place with a Glue Dot. No knot on the back of the button. Simply cross the threads, apply the Glue Dot and trim the excess flax.

 

 I made two copies of the stamp image. The first one is colored with Inktense Pencils. I used a white Gelly Roll Pen to make stitch marks around the edge of the heart. After cutting away most of the key, I coated the heart with Close To My Heart's Liquid Glass. The other copy I used to make the black key.  The key is covered with Black Enamel Accents by Ranger. I layered the key over the heart where the key was printed.

 

 

I decided the card needed something to finish it off, so I cut out 2 small hearts on my Cricut. I coated them with Liquid Glass also, and attached them as shown. Finally I layered the plaid paper onto a white card.
